A New Year

I'm one of those people who says, "out with the old in with the new!" I love cleaning and organizing for the new year. Above is a pic of the new journals the girls and I purchased to begin recording our 2012 thoughts. It's funny how just the cover of the journal can inspire you.

I was also inspired when I read this blog. This young lady changed my whole thought process regarding the new year. I got so caught up in beginning anew that I forgot there were so many lessons learned in the old year. So much that doesn't need to be wiped clean from my slate. I'm so glad my eyes were opened. Emily Rose speaks the truth when she says,

"Isn’t the Lord gracious to give us that groundwork? To learn from the past, be sanctified in the present, and reform in the future?
Let us not forget from where we came or where we’re going."

A month of fasting

Tomorrow my family and I start the Daniel Fast. I'm excited...and apprehensive. So many positive things have already happened in 2012. I'm looking forward to cleansing my body, mind and soul.

2011 was filled with so many good things...and bad. Such is every year. I'm glad for a new year to begin-a clean slate. I started the new year off today on such a positive note. About 4 years ago we had a bit of a feud in our family. Since then I've been hurt, angry, withdrawn and finally to the point where it didn't matter to me anymore. All I wanted was reconciliation. I wanted to be with my family, to love them and feel their love. I prayed and prayed. I got impatient because God wasn't working fast enough for me. Today...New Year's Day 2012...we finally met and the healing began. Lots of words exchanged, lots of tears shed. It's funny how we can misinterperate and how small hills grow into huge mountains. Satan is good at that. Today we (with God ) beat him. My verse for today is Hebrews 12:14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

I encourage you, if you have issues, problems in your life, to persist. God doesn't want strife and discord in our lives. Pray continually. He won't fail you and He won't forget. My problem was being impatient. Now I realize that God's timing is perfect. Happy new year 2012! May you be blessed!

My Christmas Gift

I got the most amazing gift from my husband for Christmas! A Go Cutter! (actually I got the Go Baby). Not only is it cute (really it is! It even has a little pink carrying bag), but I know it will save me so much time with my quilting. I can't wait to try one of the many free projects that came with it. The New (sewing) year is looking very bright!

Mannequin (pin cushion)

I finally got around to sewing these beautiful mannequins! They're supposed to be pin cushions but these are just to look pretty in my girls rooms. They're so easy to make with only a fat quarter, candle stick , button and mini ornament. There's a wonderful video tutorial here. I made mine from candlesticks that were my husband's grandmothers. She was my dear friend and always had these candlesticks sitting on her kitchen table. I spray painted them to match the girl's rooms. The buttons are also from her collection. Now my little ladies will have a gift made by mom but full of memories of great-grandmother.

Every year I struggle to decide what to give to the dance teachers, vet, neighbors, etc. I love making sweets but wonder if people aren't overloaded this time of the year . This Christmas season I decided to bake bread to give away. I mixed hard white wheat and Kamut to make my flour. The result was some yummy bread to share.

Here are just a few reasons why:

I love to watch our dogs 'work'. They are truly amazing animals.

We get to spend quality time as a family with no outside interruptions (TV, computer, phones, etc.)

SNOW!!! We certainly don't get this in south Alabama!

A simpler life. Mrs. Marion runs a small store which is also the post office. She sells home-baked goodies including breads and tarts. Every time we go in she insists the girls pick out something to take as a gift from her. She always has time to visit with us.

The main reason I keep returning is to see my buddy Cheryl. 2 weeks a year is just not long enough to spend with her.

Each year when we go to Canada I like to take handmade gifts for my friends. This year I decided to make everyone more of these cute baskets. I found the tutorial on Ayumi's blog. I loved using all the different colors and patterns. Once we arrived in Canada I baked cookies to fill each basket.

We arrived in Canada a few days ago. So far we've been to a volleyball game, ice skating twice, shopping, carved pumpkins and visited with several friends. Today one of Grace's friends invited her to go to school. She was excited to go along. I can't wait to hear all about her day.

Living each moment

Lately several people we love have experienced loss. It hurts my heart deeply to watch them grieve and to grieve with them. At the same time it's a wake-up call for me. Life can be short. I need to love more, laugh more and enjoy my family and friends more. God has blessed me abundantly . I must slow down and cherish my blessings.

More birthday sewing

This gift for sweet Candice took me a while. Not because the sewing was difficult but because I couldn't decide which fabric to use! Lol! Finally I settled on her favorite college team-Auburn University . I made a basket for her like the one I made for Sandy along with handmade soaps. Then I tried, for the first time, to make a mug rug. I'm pretty pleased with how this one turned out . It really was fun to make.
Next on the list is sewing for my northern friends. Suggestions are appreciated. :)

Cathedral Windows-WIP

Here's my feeble attempt at Cathedral Windows. Don't laugh! It was actually easier than I thought. Granted I haven't perfected it yet, but I did have fun trying. Thanks to this blog, I had step by step instructions.

When I showed my husband my work, he showered me in praise. This should have made me smile, but instead tears flowed down my cheeks. Why? Because I have regrets. You see, my Granny used to make these squares. The last few years I've wondered how they were made and what the name was. Granny passed away 11 years ago. She did all kinds of little sewing projects-quilting, clothes, yo-yo's, etc. She taught me how to hem but that's all the sewing I learned from her. I just never asked. I'm sure she would have been glad to show me. At the time I had 2 little girls and just wasn't interested in sewing. Now I am. I so wish she was here to show me how to make these squares. To smile when I finished one correctly. To help me choose fabric. But, at least now I've learned. I can make something that my Granny worked on. I can teach my girls. I know my Granny is smiling down at me. I know she's proud.

This has been one of those days where so many things have gone wrong. Major things. Sometimes you have to laugh so you don't cry! In my case, I decided to throw myself into sewing. Sewing makes it all better. I had been wanting to try this tutorial. It was so fast and easy! Now I have one Christmas present made. So many more to go.

Maybe we could classify today's school project as logic. Lol! Yesterday we purchased this Jane Austen puzzle at our local book store . This morning, after Bible and chores, it sat on the kitchen table beckoning. We couldn't resist. The four of us jumped on it before the school schedule could be opened. What a happy Friday morning! Now to frame it and put it in our school room. You know, maybe we could count this as literature. After all it is Jane Austen!

Dresden...skirt?

So, I want to be a quilter. I honestly thought this would be an easy task. I've sewn for years now. Some little quilting projects I've attempted have turned out pretty well. Not perfect mind you, but workable.

This past week I've spent a lot of time drooling over my favorite quilting blogs. I happened upon a tutorial for a Dresden plate. How beautiful! All the pretty fabrics with rounded edges carefully placed together to make a circle. As I read the instructions, I thought "I can do this" . She really does make is look easy.

Saturday was the day. I pulled out my scraps and started cutting. I was amazed at how smoothly it was going. Then I sewed the sections together. Hmm...it wasn't quite laying flat. Maybe if I sewed a bit more here...Nope. Finally in frustration I put it all down. I couldn't believe I'd spent all that time and had nothing to show for it. I hate to waste time and I really dislike wasting fabric.

This was still on my mind Sunday afternoon. Another thing about me-I don't give up easily. I went back to my sewing room and started again with this little piece of fabric. The result...

A Dresden skirt for Emma's doll! I think it looks just lovely!

Now, if anyone can give me pointers on how to make my Dresden plate properly, so that it will lay flat, I would greatly appreciate it. :) Until then I think I'll stick with the 9 patch!

Falling...into peace

I received some news today that shook my usually secure world. For a brief moment in time, I felt the weight of it and let myself start to fall-to cry, to worry, to fear. Then I was given some hope.

Early morning

It seems that the older I get, the less sleep I need. I'm usually the first one up at our house. I cherish the time alone in the quiet. Some mornings I wake a little earlier than I'd like. :) I hate to sit in bed and waste time. If I can't sleep, I get up and find something to do. On this particular morning I was awake about 3:30am. I caught up on email and blogs, did some laundry and cleaned in the kitchen, patiently waiting for the sun to come up. I'm a big chicken and don't like to go outside in the dark...alone. At daylight, I headed to our dock at the creek to mail a card. The view I was presented with caused me to slow down...to look around...to listen...to praise our wondrous Maker!

I was in awe of the beauty! We've had this property about 12 years and it never gets old. I sat on the dock and watched the fish jump, saw the blue herons hunting their breakfast and listened to the frogs sing. I was also frightened by an alligator making his way into the water. I remained still observing this magnificent place God has placed right at my door.

When I finally walked up to the house I was blessed once more. This time by numerous hummingbirds fighting over my feeders. I stood still, listening to them buzzing over my head and watching with awe as they hovered around me.

As I entered the house I was filled with so much happiness. There's no other word for it. So I missed a bit of sleep. God had blessed me ten fold with the richness of His creation. I would rather experience this than sleep till 9:00 any day!

A good find

I love to shop at thrift stores! My girls and I try to go every week. We've managed to find lots of good deals on everything from clothes and everyday china to toys and sewing supplies. Our latest find was this little doll bed for Emma. It was only $3.99! It even came with the mattress. We cleaned it all up then went through my scrap fabric. In a short time I had whipped up this bedding that perfectly matches Emma's room. Emma loves it and I think her doll does too!

Little tags

One of the fun things about girls is that they love to be surrounded by friends. It seems we're always planning playdates or going to parties. Sometimes I run out of ideas for gifts for all the different parties and holidays. This time we decided on a little purse (what girl doesn't need a new purse) with a bit of a spin.

I love to sew these little tags. Usually I attach them with ribbon. This time I decided to add a ring so that they could be removed and put on different bags. Emma has one that I keep on her backpack but can change it over to her dance bag or even her duffle bag when we travel.

I made this cute 'paperdoll' tag for a baby shower. The fabric was some I'd saved after making a dress for Emma when she was a toddler.

Welcome friends to what I think of as the loveliest room in my home-my little sewing room. Some people call there's a studio but mine is a plain and simple sewing room. I wanted it to feel like you were walking into your Grandmother's attic. My love of old things is evident. I especially cherish those pieces with lots of memories. Around my room you'll find a quilt my grandmother made, a quilt made by Mark's great-grandmother, linens from Mark's grandmother, a table my father-in-law used for years and refinished for us and the christening gown I made.

The cradle at the foot of the wrought iron bed holds years worth of sewing magazines that I just can't part with.

If you happen to be counting, yes there are 3 sewing machines in my room. You see I share this room with my girls. I love to have them come in and sew with me.

I adore having pretty things to store all my clutter in. :) Around the room are hat boxes, baskets-both wicker and metal and an antique armoire that was my grandfather's.

I treasure my little room with the warm, yellow walls and the big window that lets the afternoon sun shine through. It's a perfect space to create in-surrounded by my girls and so many memories.

I serve such a wonderful God. So...why does it always surprise me when he blesses me? A while ago I started praying that He'd help me rise early to be with Him. He's been so faithful. I wake up early, before the rest of the house and the first thing on my mind is being with Him.

I go to our place-my dining room table that has windows overlooking the water, facing the east. Almost always, as soon as I finish my Bible reading, the sun shows it's face above the trees. Just as I begin my prayer time I feel the warmth. I feel the embrace of our Lord who is always, always there for me. This summer has been kind of tough for our family. Over and over again God has shown His faithfulness-in the big things and the small. I still worry about a lot. But, I know that every morning He will meet me there and take the load that I carry. What an awesome God I serve!

First day of school

The public schools in our area started back on August 15. That's a bit too early for us to jump into a full schedule. This year we're easing into it. August 16 was the first day of co-op classes for us. We haven't participated in a co-op in several years. I signed up this time because so much of what they offered was what we were going to be doing anyway. Plus it's just fun for the girls to be with their friends at least one day a week.

Cooking Class

Eating happens to be a hobby for me. I just wish cooking was! LOL! I enjoy cooking, it just doesn't come easy for me and doesn't always turn out the way I plan. I'm working on that though.

Recently we had our Spanish tutor and good friend over to show us how to make empanadas. Beatriz is originally from Columbia. I've had empanadas while in Argentina, but these were different.

The fillings were 2 different meats. One was a roast that was boiled, torn and added to a red salsa and boiled potatoes. The other was boiled chicken mixed with red salsa and boiled potatoes. Both were put into a cornmeal dough and deep fried.

She made a yummy green salsa for dipping.

The lesson concluded with a total of 80 empanadas and some very full tummies! I can't wait to try them again.

Our Girl's Road Trip

Nothing does my heart more good that spending time with my girls. At the end of July we decided to go on a road trip. It's kind of an annual thing for us. This year was a bit different...a bit farther. Usually we travel in our state or neighboring states. For this drive we were heading north, way north-all the way to Brainerd, MN. Grace and I sat on the back porch one evening a couple of weeks prior to leaving to plan the drive. I casually asked Grace, "How many miles to MN?" She hesitantly replied, "14oo". My mouth fell open! Seriously??? I know where Minnesota is. I've flown there many times. I've just never driven there-by myself with 3 children and 1 dog. I immediately decided this was crazy. We would be driving from the bottom of our country almost all the way to the top (within 6 hours of Canada). My hubby came to the rescue and assured me that I could do it and that the girls and I would make so many memories.

So, that Thursday morning we loaded up our small SUV and departed about 7:00am. The first day we drove all the way to Wentzville, MO (just above St. Louis). The following day we made it to our destination around 7:30 pm. Honestly it wasn't as bad as I thought to drive 1400 miles. I love seeing our beautiful country and this was the perfect opportunity.

You may be asking why we wanted to go to Brainerd, MN. Well, it involves a dog...actually 3. Our puppies are up there at a kennel called Pine Shadows for training. They left in June and will return home in Sept. We just couldn't wait to see them. Plus we wanted to see where 2 of our Springer Spaniels were born and meet their 'family'. We also happen to be good friends with the trainer and his family. We visited the kennel, broke bread with our friends and shopped at the nearby town of Nisswa.

Yes, it was well worth the 22 hours and 1400 miles (one way) to see our babies and friends. Now I'm wondering where our next adventure will take us.

A Special Birthday

13 is a special year for a girl. You're right in the middle of wanting to be a girl and wanting to grow up. To celebrate Grace's milestone she decided on a swing dancing/ice cream social.

The cake was pretty easy. I borrowed an old 45 record from my dad, put toothpicks on the cake and set it on top.

We decorated the back porch with old records and balloons in black, silver and red. I set up tables for the food and drinks. We also had the Bose out there to play music. Thankfully the porch is wide enough to swing dance. When everyone was tired of that they played outside games-Capture the flag, sardines, etc. Later in the evening it started to rain so they all came inside and played more games and ate more food. :)

Grace, along with all her friends said they had a wonderful time. It did my heart good to make my baby girl happy and to have all her friends running around our house and yard. Happy birthday Gracie girl!

A family that plays together....

I love having our daughters home all the time. In fact it hurts my heart for them to go to a friend's house overnight. That probably sounds silly , especially since we homeschool and are around each other all the time. I just keep thinking that I may not have that much more time with them. One day they'll go off to start their own families. It won't be the same anymore. So, for now, we're sticking close together-for school, for worship and for fun.

Yesterday we spent the afternoon on the river water skiing-one of our favorite past times. I didn't learn to ski until I met my husband. While we were dating we spent the weekend with his grandparents on Pickwick Lake in NE Mississippi. His grandfather taught me to ski in the same boat Mark learned to ski with. It was a wonderful weekend. Fast forward to about 5 years ago. Mark bought a used ski boat. His idea was for us to make our own fun and keep our family together. The girls were so scared to try skiing. To keep the peace, I agreed to go first-on the original skis I'd learned on all those years ago. Did I mention I hadn't skied since I was in MS? Thankfully I got up the first time! Mary and Grace followed.

Emma (7yrs old) is the only left to learn to ski. She gave it a good try yesterday. Mark's dream is to pull all of us girls behind the old Master Craft at one time. Sounds good...but I think we'll need a river a bit bigger than ours. Lol!

A new (school) year

Every year at this time I get so excited! A new year-not on the calendar, but for school. At first I have to admit that I stress. What shall we do this year? Last year we took the plunge and totally changed our curriculum. This year, we're changing back. It was good for a while but we prefer the old way. We like the classical approach to homeschooling our girls. I especially love us all piling up on the sofa or spreading a blanket in the yard and getting to read to my girls. I like mixing the 2nd grader with the 9th grader.

So, I've purchased all the supplies for the year. I just love stocking up on colors and paper, pencils and notebooks. Grace and I organized the school room yesterday. Most of the books are back in alphabetical order. The supplies are grouped together all neat and orderly. We bought new maps and have hung them. I got a new binder for our schedule and a new day planner from SCM (I've used these for several years and they're my favorite). Today I'm actually working on our schedule-hope to be finished before next week.

Speaking of schedules, I know some people who don't use them at all. I can't imagine schooling this way. I love to have our school year mapped out. I want to know where we've started and where we're heading. I like to set goals and reach them. If I get it on paper it somehow helps me to organize my mind. I was especially happy one day when our pastor spoke of how our God is an organized God. He plans/planned things out in detail. Just look at the Bible! So....maybe it's not cleanliness that's next to Godliness, but organization! :)

You may be curious as to what we're doing this year. Ambleside Online is my absolute favorite approach to schooling. We've used it for several years. It's based on Charlotte Mason's style of teaching. My big girls are 8th and 9th grade. We'll use some books from Year 8 and some from Year 9. They'll be going to a co-op 1 day a week that will offer IEW (an incredible writing program), Apologia Biology and History (concentrating on documents from the same time period as AO)and Bible. We'll have Saxon math, Latina Christina and Rosetta Stone Spanish.

Emma who is 2nd grade will have English for the thoughtful child, Apologia Botany, All about spelling, Prima Latin, The Story of the World and Rosetta Stone Spanish. At co-op she'll do science experiments, history (Biblioplan), Bible, memory, language, chorus and logic games. I haven't chosen a math program for her yet.

I'll post our detailed schedule and the complete book list later. For now I'm in my element planning and anticipating all the fun we'll have learning together. I'm so blessed to be able to stay home and teach my children. Visit soon...there's more to come.

Hello friends

This summer we've checked out for a bit. We've been sewing, going for boat rides, having ice cream on the river and enjoying all the friends who have come for short visits and some for long visits. We just got back from a long road trip-just us girls. It was fabulous! I can't wait to tell you about it. Plus all the changes in our home and plans for a new school year. It's an exciting time.

Tonight I've been catching up with all my friends; all those blogs I follow. I've missed you guys! I love seeing what every one's making and doing and thinking about. It makes life even more fun and interesting. While I catch up with all of you, I hope you'll be patient with me. Come back...I'll post soon. :)

Simple Gifts

My daughter's are blessed to have many talented teachers in their lives even though they are homeschooled. Every year I like to show my gratitude by giving a small, handmade gift to these ladies. The hard part is finding something that I think will be practical and not just another something to sit on the shelf. This year the girls suggested I make little bird sachets for their dance teachers. They thought they'd be nice to slip into their dance bags to keep their ballet and jazz shoes smelling fresh.

The girls picked out the fabric, cut out each piece then after I sewed them together, they stuffed them. Each had a couple of drops of lavender essential oil (my favorite). We placed them into clear bags along with a poem and note from the girls. Today I let the girls hand them out at rehearsal. All of the teachers seemed thrilled with their little gifts.

Giving Back

My girls have been taking violin lessons for about 2 1/2 years. They have the cutest little teacher who is amazingly talented. She's in her 70's and has taught music most of her adult life. Every week we spend 1 1/2 hours with her. Through that time we've gotten to know her pretty well. She's spunky and full of life with her feet deeply grounded in her faith. She's such a positive role model for our family.

The month of May is winding down and soon violin lessons will stop for the summer. The girls and I wanted to give Mrs. Lizanne a little something to show her how much she means to us.

I made this little quilt to match the pillows I made for her for Christmas. If you look closely at the fabric you'll see music notes, composer's names, etc

One day in class as we talked about sewing (we do manage to get music lessons in among all our visiting!), she mentioned something her grandmother made. The grandmother would sew tiny strawberries from fabric and place them in a strawberry basket to decorate her kitchen. Mrs. Lizanne said she loved seeing these at her grandmother's and even now it was such a pleasant memory. Shortly after our conversation I came across this tutorial. I knew I had to make them.

A Gift for me

For my birthday this year I received the most lovely gift in the mail...all the way from Utah to the deep south. Joy is the wife of one of my Army buddies. She's a southern belle from Kentucky who moved to Utah for her true love. She's super creative-loves to scrapbook and quilt. I was speechless when this package came for me. She combined 2 of my loves-quilting and Auburn University (War Eagle!).

I'm still in awe of all the time and energy she put into this precious gift. No one has ever made a quilt for me. What makes it super special is that Joy and I have never met face-to-face. She married my buddy and automatically became my 'southern sista'. :) Everytime I wrap up in my quilt I think of her and how much she loves me. What a special gift from a special person.

My Garden

There are many things in my life that I'm passionate about. I enjoy my hobbies-keeping my hands busy. When I was growing up my parents always planted an incredibly large garden. We picked peas for hours! I recall hating that part. LOL! On the other hand I thoroughly enjoyed all the jars of green beans, peas, butter bean, pickles, etc that we had to eat all year long. One problem was that although I worked in the garden days on end, I never really learned what it took to raise a healthy garden. Therefore when I grew up, I had several gardens fail (not always totally). This year I decided to change things. I started out reading this magazine. That was a good first step. Then I decided that maybe what I needed to do was take baby steps-start with a tiny garden. It is really small! But, when I look at it I don't feel overwhelmed. I feel content. I can do this!

I'm happy to say I have lots of baby squash growing..

And some grape tomatoes...

I have dill, rosemary, onions, carrots, chives, garlic, lettuce and cucumbers (my dream is to make dill pickles!) . So far the bugs have stayed away, except for some nasty black grasshoppers. I found a tea to brew to keep them long gone.

I'm not just growing veges though. Emma and I started a small flower garden. We have a rose bush that was once just a cutting from my Granny's bush. It's moved three times now. Every year when it blooms I can just see my Granny. She was a wonderful gardener. One of the reasons I garden is to be more like her. She was (and still is) one of the most special people in my life.

What's funny about this lily is I know someone gave it to me...I just can't remember who! Isn't it beautiful?

Emma has 2 Gerber daisies of her own planted (one white and one pink). We have a bleeding heart that was a cutting from my great aunt, some pretty red petunias (my Granny's favorite), sunflowers that are really getting tall and of course lots of zinnias. Even on my worst days I can't help but smile and feel God's hand upon me when I walk and gaze at my garden.

Our Daily Bread

It was a gorgeous day outside today but....we stayed in. What could possibly tear us away from the gentle breeze and all the blooming flowers? It was bread baking day. Recently I went to a bread baking class. Not your typical class. Not only did she show us the proper way to make a perfect loaf of bread, she also told us exactly why this type of bread was so nutritious. I learned the importance of milling my own flour and making my own bread. Whole wheat bread provides 4 main benefits that are essential to a healthy lifestyle: Vitamin E, Insoluble Fiber, 40 of the 44 essential life nutrients and Convenience!

From that day on I embarked on a journey to learn more about bread baking. Thankfully all of my close friends bake their own bread and have graciously helped me. We have a grain co-op in our area (group of families that order wheat once a year and save on freight costs). I ordered my grain (hard white wheat, spelt and kamut -a gluten free grain). Then made a few purchases from Pleasant Hill Grain. (btw they had great prices and my things were here within 4 days!).

All that was left to do was actually bake the bread.

Nutrition 101: Choose Life!

For the last couple of months our family has been going through a nutritional overhaul! LOL! We've always been healthy eaters-my girls eat almost every vegetable, we hardly ever fry foods (even though we live in the deep south where EVERYTHING is fried) and we drink lots of water. After starting with a new chiropractor we were encouraged to go on a sugar free/gluten free diet. At first I thought this would be the end of the world! After a couple of days I realized that it wasn't so bad. Just because we gave up sugar didn't mean we couldn't have sweets. Quilt of Dreams

I am blessed with so many wonderful friends. One of which makes me happy and sad. When I first met her she scared me! LOL! We're total opposites. Physically we're different-she has fair skin and is blond and well...I'm not. :) As far as personalities-she's a very strong, opinionated woman. She's not afraid to speak up and she works well under pressure. Me, well, I'm a little quieter, more timid (kind of) and just not the leader that she is. So, what do we have in common? We're both nurses (well, I was), we have girls and we're both very tender hearted.

The one thing I've figured out about Cheryl over the years is that she may have a hard exterior, but I've never met a woman with a kinder more giving heart. She's been through a lot in her life. Some of which I can't even imagine. Yet she's chosen to take the high road and find the good in the not so pleasant. She's a go-getter, a terribly hard worker, a wonderful mom and wife and the most amazing friend. She's always there for me. I know that if I need her all I have to do is pick up the phone and call. She would be here in a heart beat if I asked her.

Only one problem....she lives over 2000 miles away from me. :( I'm in the deep south and she's on the prairie in Canada. I get to see her for about 2 weeks every year. That's it. She's been to my house once. I talk to her often, email , text and think about her daily. I know without a shadow of a doubt that God put her in my life for a reason. She's truly a rare treasure to me.

So...when her birthday came around I wanted to do something special. That was hard because I didn't know what to do. She's very good about inquiring about me but doesn't like to dwell on herself.

I like to sew things. I don't think I'm creative or talented. I just know that I put a whole lot of love into everything I make. I hope those who receive my gifts can feel it.

For Cheryl I chose a mini quilt. She likes old things. She appreciates handmade gifts. The fabric I chose is my absolute favorite. I've been saving it up. It depicts scenes of Paris, one of my all time favorite places. Why would I choose this for someone who is in Manitoba, Canada? Because one day in the future I'd love to go on a trip with her. Somewhere fun and different where we could really get to know each other while experiencing something new. How fun would that be?

Therefore I made a quilt that she could look at and I could remember. Hopefully every time we think about it we'll dream about the time we may be so fortunate as to travel together and grow in our friendship.

But if it never happens I'll be completely happy. She's such a breath of fresh air, a kiss from heaven that's been shared with me. Such a dear and loved friend. I SO look forward to those 2 weeks every fall and truly cherish them. Happy birthday Cheryl.

Milestones

Look who just learned to ride her bike without training wheels. Mark and I started reminiscing about when her sisters had accomplished the same feat...and even when we as children had finally mastered the two wheeler. I recall such a sense of freedom. I could go so fast and so far. It was truly a monumental time in my life just as it is now in hers. One more step along the path of growing up. For now I'm enjoying watching her. Every spare moment she's on that bike. It's such a sweet time. Makes me smile to watch her.

Zeezok Publishing Review

Zeezok is a company that's been around since 2003. They offer several items including High School government curriculum, Great Composers Series, various lapbooks and ebook guides. There newest product is the ZGuide. These movie guides are a great way to incorporate media (a powerful teaching tool in our increasingly electronic society) into any curriculum.

Each ZGuide contains a topic overview, movie synopsis, and ten learning activities for an in-depth study of the film. The topic overview puts the film in historical context, giving a student with no prior knowledge of the topic important background information. The one-page movie synopsis provides a more detailed explanation of the movie's storyline than typically found on the back cover of the video case or on movie review websites. While watching the film the first time through, students answer the movie review questions. This assignment forces the viewer to become an active learner rather than a passive observer. Nine additional activities provide interdisciplinary educational opportunities built around the movie's themes. Certain activities require the student to use outside resources (library, internet, etc.) to learn more about the topic. Several of the guides contain related memorization selections, combined with a public performance option, to develop the student's mental powers and public speaking abilities. Creative and critical writing assignments nurture the student's confidence in putting their thoughts on paper. Every guide contains a "hands-on" activity for the kinesthetic learner, designed to develop the student's artistic talents. The "Worldview Activity" goes to the heart of critical thinking by asking the student to evaluate the actors' attitudes and actions. "The Filmmaker's Art" activity focuses on movie-making techniques and their effect on the viewer. Parents and siblings can contribute their thoughts with the "For Family Discussion" section at the end of each guide. For my review, Zeezok and TOS provided us with the movie guide for One Night with the King (which is a movie I highly recommend). The topics included in our guide were: Ancient Persian History, Ancient Jewish History, Loyalty, Results of Excessive Pride and Desire for Revenge , God's Providence.

The age level for this guide is High School.

Price- $12.99/ CD

My opinion- this is an incredible way to get the most out of quality movies. So many times we sit and watch but don't retain. Using this guide will allow you and your child/student to thoroughly discuss the topics of the movie. I highly recommend it.

The goal of ZGuide is not just supplemental educational activities but to teach the viewer to think critically. This is an important concept for any age.

Carrot Cake Recipe

This delicious cake was on the cover of Southern Lady magazine recently. I decided to give it a try. It was absolutely delicious!

1 1/2 cups butter, softened

2 cups sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

6 large eggs, separated

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup buttermilk

2 cups shredded carrot

1 1/2 cups finely chopped pecans

1 (8 1/2 ounce) can crushed pineapple, well drained

Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe follows)

1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour 3 (9-inch) cake pans.

2. In a large bowl, combine butter, sugar and vanilla. Beat at medium speed until fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

3. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.

4. In a large bowl, beat egg whites at high speed until stiff peaks form. Fold beaten egg whites into butter mixture until well combined. Gently stir in carrots, pecans, and pineapple. Spoon batter into prepared pans. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes. Remove from pans, cool completely on wire racks.

5. Spread Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting evenly between layers and on top and sides of cake.

Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

12 ounces cream cheese, softened

3/4 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

8 cups confectioners' sugar

1. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, vanilla and cinnamon at medium speed with a mixer until creamy. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until smooth.

Ginger Pineapple Slush

Looking for something refreshing...and healthy? This is my all time favorite drink. It's super easy to make too. Get out your blender, slice up a pineapple, grate some fresh ginger (1/4 tsp-but I add much more), add ice and blend. If you have any left over pour it into Popsicle molds. My 7 yr old loves these!

A Winter Exchange

I've got a dear friend that I've never met...in person. I've gotten to know her through her blog. Last year she put together a mom's group with all of us online friends. We can chat on a forum, share ideas and even do exchanges. This was where we filled a box with 'happies'. You can make them or buy them. This year she and I did a winter exchange. I have to admit it's a bit difficult for me, tucked away in the deep south, to come up with ideas for a winter box, but I gave it a try. Another thing we try to incorporate is favorite colors. She likes earth tones, especially brown; her daughters like orange and aqua. I had so much fun working on these things for my friends.

For Kim, a little quilted pillow and journal. I know the pillow's not big, but the idea is to curl up on a winter day, get comfy and write in the journal.

Here are 2 little pillows for her girls.

Also for her and her girls, nature journals. My girls and I love to use water colors or oil pastels to try to capture nature. I can just imagine them looking out their window at the snow and adding to their nature journals.

Winter also makes me think of being in the kitchen- a big pot of soup simmering and bread in the oven. Here's a little dressy dish towel for their kitchen. (I apologize for how dirty my oven door was when I took this picture. LOL!)

Finally, in the depths of a cold winter we can't help but dream of spring. I made 3 tiny birds to remind them that spring would soon come to them.

Last was a miniature pin cushion. On those cold snowy nights I can imagine them sitting by the fire, sewing and mending.

I hope they enjoy the gifts as much as I enjoyed making them. I look forward to the next exchange with my friends.

Here in the south it has looked and felt like spring for a while now. In fact, my 7 year old keeps asking me if it's summer yet. :)

I love spring. To me it means new beginnings, freshness, freedom. We started Spring with a nice time at church (isn't it cool when you've read a verse over and over then someone else reads it and points out something you've never even 'seen'! God is so good that way!), followed by a fabulous meal that my husband made. I then spent the next few hours outside, alone, with nature. I started reading a really good book (which I'll post about later) that managed to change my outlook and mood in just a few pages. Next I went for a kayak ride. When I got back I was ready to face my family with a whole new attitude. We ended the afternoon with a family bike ride-stopping to talk and admire the blooming flowers, catch up and connect.

The first day of Spring could not have been more perfect for me.

Sewing for baby

Two of my dear friends had babies recently-one girl and one boy. I've had so much fun sewing for them. Here is a glimpse of their gifts:
Lisa didn't know at the time of her shower if she would be having a boy or girl. So, instead of monogramming a name on the blanket I put a verse:

Down south we like to hang things on the hospital door when baby arrives. Most of the time it's a bow; more recently there have been pretty pink or blue wreaths. My friend asked if I would make the bow for her. Unfortunately I'm not very good at making bows. Thankfully though she told me I could be as creative as I wanted, so i designed this little quilt hanging. I love the way it turned out.

To have the faith of a child…

I happened to read my daughter's blog today. Wow! I'm continually amazed by her in so many ways. She's beautiful, smart, talented and oh so sweet. Most of all she has this relationship with the Lord that blows me away. I'm so comforted to know that her heart is right, that she 'gets it' and that I will be able to spend eternity with her in heaven one day. I wanted to share her post with you.

Devotion

So, at Youth Group this week, I have to do the devotion. It isn't hard, because there is usually at the most, ten people. I thought, since you couldn't be there, that I would do it on here.

I am doing it on Jesus' return, and the tribulation. It is a scary thing, but people don't realize that it is the most wonderful day for us Christians that will ever, ever, EVER be! Jesus will take us up to Heaven, and we will be there for eternity with Him. We will have whole new bodies, and be able to do all the splits, home runs, and flips that you can ever do! It will be an ugly sight for all the non-believers and atheists, but that is why we have to keep going and spreading the Good News so that we can be in Heaven with everyone that we love. I do admit, I was scared to be in Heaven. I was scared about the day that Jesus is coming back. I wanted to make a bargain with God. I would pray and ask "God, if only You will let me get married. If only You will let me have children. If only I could live a long life, THEN You can come and take me to Heaven." I didn't want to go to be with God. I started to pray, and read my Bible more this year. God has given me a peace about the tribulation day. I will be ready to go spend eternity with Jesus. I want to worship Him every day. I will spend eternity with my great-grandmother. I will meet my great-grandfather. I can be with all the dogs that I ever had! It will be the best day in the world.

11 years ago when we embarked on our homeschooling adventure the single most thing I was afraid of was teaching my child to read. How could I possibly do it? I understood that reading is the most important step in a quality education. Today there are many tools to teach your child to read. The Reading Kingdom happens to be one that lets your child have fun while working on their reading skills. It's colorful with cute little characters and is so easy to use that once we set it up, my daughter could work alone. Target age is 4-10 years for this website based curriculum.

How the Program is Organized

The Skills Survey
The program begins with your child taking a Skills Survey. Through simple, game-like activities, it reveals the skills a child has and does not have so that the program can start at exactly the right place to encourage the greatest success.

The Teaching
Once the Skills Survey is completed, the teaching begins. The program is organized into six levels.

Pre-reading Level

Teaches the Visual Sequencing and Keyboarding Skills that underlie reading and writing. A child goes through one or both of these programs if the Skills Survey shows that these components are needed.

Level 1
Gets your child reading, understanding and writing meaningful ideas by teaching key nouns (kids, girl, bird), verbs (actions such as eat, walk, fly) and "helping" words (the, some, is, can, are). Once a set of words has been taught, the child gets to read a book containing those words, along with words previously taught. As in all subsequent levels, there are six books in Level 2.

Level 2

Greatly expands the range of ideas your child reads and writes by adding new nouns (puppies, man, water), verbs relevant to those nouns (run, fix, move, including words that convey motivation such as need, want, like), pronouns (she, I, we), additional "helping" words (that, also, both, of) and question words (who, what, which).

Level 3

Enhances your child's ability to tell and understand stories by teaching the words to convey past tense (was, did, were), along with increasing the range of nouns (ground, rocks), verbs (push, think, hurt), "helping" words (most, on, any), and adjectives (sad, happy, nice, -y as in dirty, rocky).

Level 4
Gets your child reading subject matter that is different from typical stories and essential to school success. It introduces a wide variety of objects and beings from the natural world (animals, rainbow, moon, tongue, group, people, earth) and higher level question words (why, when, how). These are then incorporated into books that convey science type information.

Level 5

Has your child reading rich stories which provide a sense of fun while teaching complex cause and effect relationships by expanding the range of nouns (computer, letter, fish) and verbs (change, know, float), and introducing a set of complex ideas (luck, true, never, change, sure).

Keeping Track
Within a few weeks, many children are using the program totally on their own. Even though you may not be there during the lessons, you'll have no trouble keeping track of how your child is doing. After a session is completed, you can open a link that offers you a summary of how the session went, where your child is at, what's happening next and so on.

Progress Check
The Reading Kingdom has been designed so that a child moves ahead only if the learning is solid and secure. At regular points, a child is given a brief Progress Check to see if there is mastery of the material that has been taught.

If the Progress Check shows that your child is doing well, in the next session he or she moves on to new material.

On the other hand, if the Skills Survey shows some weaknesses in the learning, then in the next session, your child starts a set of review lessons that enable him or her to get past any difficulties. A Cinderella Tea Party

Sugar and spice and all things nice.

That's what little girls are made of.

Also crowns, frills and high heels! Girls are so much fun. This weekend we got to pull out the pretty dresses, costumes and pearls and go to a tea party...with Cinderella. What could be more perfect-a "ballet" tea party. While we nibbled on cucumber sandwiches shaped as little flowers and chocolate covered strawberries we were entertained with the story of Cinderella and then a ballet performance. It was a magical, delightful way to spend the afternoon.

Two of my girls got to help out (Mary is all the way at the end and Grace is the 4th from the end). The tea party was held at a local yacht club on the bay. What a beautiful setting.

Math Rider Review

Everyone always says that hindsight is 20/20. I truly believe it. Looking back, I feel there are so many mistakes that I've made in teaching my children. Poor Mary and Grace. I'm trying hard to do better with them. Hopefully all of my mistakes won't leave 'permanent damage'. LOL! Fortunately for Emma, she's getting to reap the benefits of being the youngest.

One of the concepts I regret not reinforcing is speedy mental math computation. I thought as long as my children mastered fundamental math, they didn't have to have speed. I've learned the hard way, that I was wrong. Because of this my older girls had to play catch up. With Emma, we're starting this now. Lucky for her, TOS let me review Math Rider.

~Math Rider lets your child practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with numbers 1-12 all while playing a game instead of doing a 'sometimes boring' worksheet. The software is formatted so that each game is custom tailored to the rider. The last few days have been unseasonably cold for us here on the coast. We'd wake up to 18 degrees and icicles hanging from the outside faucets. Surprisingly today was a very pleasant change. The air was much warmer and the sun was shining so beautifully. I couldn't resist getting outside to soak up the sun and also enjoy another pleasure of mine...reading.

I found this enchanting book on my last visit to the library. It's the perfect combination of simple sewing and vintage style. The author takes you on a stroll through the ages with quaint projects inspired by sewing history. I loved looking at all the vintage photos as much as I did reading the articles and following the sewing timeline that borders the bottom of most pages.

I like being able to try out a book first before I take the plunge and buy it. This is one 'must have' for my sewing library! What a marvelous way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

A first

Having 3 girls in our house, we've always had tons of dolls around. The girls have enjoyed dressing and undressing them time after time. You would think with all the sewing I do that I would have whipped up wardrobe after wardrobe for these little darlings. Uh...guess what? That's not the case at all. In fact, I've never even had a desire to sew doll clothes.

Recently we were at a local fabric store scanning through the pattern books. Emma kept pointing out doll patterns and begging to buy one. I tried to ignore her, but she's pretty persistent. Finally I looked and yes it was really cute. What sold me was the price-$.99. Okay I thought, I'll buy the pattern. Well, it didn't end there. Little Emma kept on reminding me that I had to make that dress. I gave in and let her pick out some fabric and I sat down to sew.

To my surprise, I really enjoyed making these miniature clothes. It was fast and oh so easy. When I unveiled the completed creation, Emma's eyes lite up as she said, "It's beautiful Mom!"
So...when she requested that I make a pretty little night gown too, I jumped right on it.
Making doll clothes might have just become another hobby of mine.

My girls have never been too fond of math so I have to say it was refreshing to find a program to actually help and answer all their questions.

River Route

My family and I are blessed to live in a quaint little town on a river in the deep south. Much of the property in the area is covered with a majestic canopy of giant oak trees and camellia bushes. In the spring you'll see azaleas, wisteria, dog wood and magnolia blossoms. At the turn of the century, the water from the many natural springs along both sides of the river was declared "the purest in the world" by several chemical companies in Chicago.

That's not the only thing our river is known for. It happens to remain the only river route mail delivery in the continental United States.

Boathouses grace each shore with a variety of styles of mailboxes attached to their docks. It's a pretty neat thing to go to the mailbox and watch the herons and pelicans while you wait for the mail to be delivered. Life is good!

Precious puppies

We've had a special delivery at our house. Our English Pointer had her puppies! We now have 6 little furry bundles of joy.

One little girl, Birtle was a little small and weak. We had to move her inside and start feeding her with a bottle. Thankfully she's eating well and growing. She goes for visits each day to see her momma and siblings. We're hoping she'll be strong enough soon to go back to stay with them all the time.

How can it be that 7 years have already passed since I first held that tiny baby in my arms? I honestly don't know where the time goes. It seems like just yesterday I was changing her diapers...now she can read and is becoming more independent everyday. One thing hasn't changed-her sweet heart. She's one of the sweetest children I've ever known. She has such a kind and loving disposition. Most importantly is that she loves the Lord with a depth that most adults have never experienced. Now she's 7!

For her birthday she wanted red velvet cupcakes. We found this pan that made the cutest tiered cakes. She and Grace helped to decorate them.

For her special cake she once again chose cheese cake. Her favorite. We had pink punch, little sandwiches and of course ice cream.

One of the activities she and her friends did was to paint wooden picture frames. We took a group shot and sent one home with each girl.

She had all of her favorite friends over. They changed dress-ups so many times that I lost count. What dear friends she has. What a sweet age. She, like Mary said, "this was the best birthday party ever!" Until next year, I'm sure. :) Happy birthday to my little blessing.

My new little hobby

I've been sewing now for about 10 years. I started out making clothes for the girls and smocking. Later I sewed a few crafts, etc. One of my dreams has been to learn to quilt. I took a class several years ago but never completed a project. When we moved I happen to see all my quilting supplies and set a goal to learn to quilt. You've got to walk before you can run, so I started with small projects. I checked a book out from the library and got started. I kept this book so long and loved it so much that I ended up purchasing my own copy.

I've now made several small quilts (all for gifts) and 2 baby sized quilts (I kept one of these for myself). I even made a couple of pillows for a quick Christmas gift. By doing these small quilts, I'm learning the technique without stressing myself out. Plus I get (almost) instant gratification. One day I'd like to complete a quilt to go on our bed. For now I get a lot of satisfaction from sewing these small squares and watching them form a beautiful pattern. It makes me feel good to think I'm continuing a tradition that my grandmother and her mother started. The sweetest thing is that one of my daughters has the quilting bug now. For Christmas I got her a quilting kit. I can just see my Granny smiling down on us. I look forward to cutting, piecing and sewing for many more years with all my girls.

A big birthday

Mary is my free-spirit, artsy, swing dancin', beautiful little socialite. She never meets a stranger and loves everyone. This girl loves a big party. She always has. Her motto, "the more the merrier!"

For her 14th birthday I knew she'd want to have ALL her friends over. Her dream party: a bonfire complete with s'mores and hotdogs and lots of capture the flag. I love to make her wishes come true. So...she invited a few friends (lol!)-

I made some s'more cupcakes. Yummy!

We set up the back porch with tables that held a crock pot of chili, chips, soda and hot chocolate. The kids played capture the flag for hours. I have to say this was a great birthday party. Mary said it was the best birthday ever! Your 14th birthday should be special... when you are as special as she is. I can't stop her from growing up so I might as well celebrate all the mile stones. I know for sure this is a birthday she'll never forget.

Entertaining large groups (anything over 2 people :) ) has always been difficult for me and really outside of my comfort zone. I worry about what to cook and if it will be edible, if the house is clean enough, etc. Once we moved into the new house I vowed to myself that this was something I'd work on because I truly feel it's what God wants in my life. I've been trying to have some sort of get-together each month. One month it was for my parent's birthdays, another was an ornament exchange party, another was some friend's birthday, one month was 'just because'. In doing this I've learned a few things. First, people don't really care what I cook. Secondly, no one has complained so far that my house was too dirty to visit. LOL! The most important thing I've learned is how much fun it is to have eveyone here, fellowshiping in our home. Don't get me wrong, I still stress out...just now I know it'll all be worth it in the end.

I never set out to be a "mega blogger'" or to have a huge following. I started my blog several years ago to capture my thoughts and to keep up with memories...and just for fun. It was a nice way to let friends and family who aren't near be a part of our lives. Just the other day one of my daughters commented, "Mom, every time I go to your blog all I see are reviews. Can you please post something else?" Wow, I really didn't think she even cared about my blog.

The Homeschool Crew is just a temporary 'fancy' of mine. I'm enjoying getting to look at all the new products and curriculum and just see what's out there. Unfortunately it has taken over my blog. Sorry about that. Like I said, it's just temporary.

The Master Clock Review

I only have 2 words for this product: really cool! Master Innovations recently sent me the Master Clock to review. It could not have come at a better time. My 6 year old has been trying to figure out the whole world of clocks and time.

Master Innovations began over 10 years with a simple goal: to make sure every child in school had a Master Ruler. Since then they've moved on to include many more math manipulatives that make learning measurements more hands on and visual.

Our family received the Master Clock to review thanks to Master Innovations and TOS. It's geared toward any age-early learners or the older child who is having issues picking up on the concept of telling time.

For $14.95 you can receive the student workbook and the Master Clock. The clock itself is 4 clock faces in one. There's the basic clock that consists of half and quarter hour markings only; the hours face; the minutes face and finally the seconds face. Each face can be superimposed unto the next. The hands of the clock can be removed and used in any combination. Therefore if the child is just learning hours and minutes, you can take the second hand off. At the top , a digital clock is included. It can be used in many different ways in the learning process. The clock is about the size of a toddler's board book, made of sturdy plastic and packaged in a thick, clear plastic bag that snaps at the top.

The workbook is 100 pages full of useful information. It starts out giving a brief history of time including different types of 'clocks' over the ages. There are several different projects your child can make to go along with this ( a clock from a paper plate, a water clock, a sand clock). The worksheets are so much more than just clock faces to identify. They really go all out to teach your child the concept of time. Which goes first, about how long does this take, just a second, am and pm, etc.

I love that the Master Clock and work book are small and light enough to take everywhere. We take it in the car all the time and recently stuck it in my daughter's back pack on a long flight. The clock is colorful; the workbook is simple to understand with short lessons that aren't overwhelming. My daughter loves 'playing' with the materials and has learned so much.

In fact, we like this product so much that I plan on ordering more Master Innovation products like the Master Ruler, Master Fractions and Master Angle. It's hard to find products that are durable, easy to use, inexpensive and that my child loves and actually learns from. Master Clock is one of those. I highly recommend it.

The Write Foundation Review

At our house, my middle daughter is our 'writer'. She's only 12, but for years she has been writing poems, short stories, etc. She has book after book filled with her words. Therefore when we received the package from The Write Foundation she was super excited. Thank you TOS for allowing us to review this product. We believe that writing is a pillar of a good education.

One thing I've learned with having 3 children is that you can't be too careful about what they put into their minds. I've always told them that what goes in through their minds ends up in their hearts. One particular incident I recall happened a couple of years ago. We were preparing to go on a trip to Europe. One of the first things we think about is having a book or books to read on the long flight. We went in a local (small town) bookstore and asked for advice on books for the girls. They took us to the appropriate section for their ages. First they tried to push the 'vampire' books on us. The girls politely declined, much to my relief. Next was the ever popular 'witch craft' books. Once again the girls said that was something they weren't interested in. Finally a series of books that had been made into a movie was presented. Because the store was about to close and our flight was leaving early the next morning, we purchased these books without reviewing them thoroughly. Much to my dismay, halfway through the book, my daughter brings to my attention not only inappropriate language, but also totally inappropriate content. I was devastated that I had let her put those things into her mind. From that point on, my husband and I decided that every book our children read would be first approved by us or someone close that we trusted. Our children's minds are just too impressionable to allow anything to enter them.

A few weeks ago I received the book "The Peleg Chronicles" by Matthew Christian Harding. TOS asked me to read and review it. The first thing I did was flip to the back cover where I read "No Magic, No Evolution, No Humanism". Immediately I thought this was going to be a good book!

This 256 page book, priced at $11.95, is written for ages 10 and up. It's classified as Historical Fiction-mine and my oldest daughter's favorite. This early human history weaves a web of entertaining and imaginative heroes who depend on the Lord for help. Faith in God is the core of what the story is about. The characters (dragons, giants, false priests, the death hunt, an under-city of the dwarven brotherhood, and many more) are brought to life by Harding. The story begins in the time period of Peleg ,after the flood of Noah, soon after the tower of Babel dispersion. "Foundlings weaves together the Biblical principles of chivalry, truth, courage, duty, faith and love within the framework of Genesis, and a bold adherence to its historicity." The Peleg Chronicles is a book I proudly read in our home and let my girls read on their own. It's so refreshing to find good literature in today's world that not only is exciting, but glorifies our Lord. I highly recommend Peleg Chronicles and hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

Schleich Figurine Review

It's not everyday that I'm as excited as my 6 year old when a package arrives. Today happened to be one of those days. Not only were the two of us pushing each other, but my other 2 girls were 'oohing and ahhing' as we pulled the Schleich figurines from the box. TOS kindly asked me to review these. What a pleasure!

Friedrich Schleich founded the company in 1935. Each figurine is engineered by a German master craftsman who works on the finest details for up to six weeks. Each one is hand painted-therefore they are all unique. Even though I no longer have toddlers around the house, it's important to me that all our toys are safe. All Schleich products are thoroughly tested by in-house experts at the German headquarters in Schwäbisch Gmünd. That means they are durable and safe.

Did I mention that these figurines are absolutely beautiful! They are simply miniatures of the real thing. I guess that's why not only toddlers enjoy them (only the larger pieces that can't cause a choking hazard), but older children and even adults like to collect them. There are so many(over 500) to pick from that boys and girls can find something they like.

Wow! How many companies would say that? I guess you can tell that I like these cute little guys and so does my daughter. I can see her playing with them for many more years. America's Math Teacher Review

I have to admit that Math is not a favorite subject around our house. When I got the chance to review America's Math Teacher for free from TOS, my children weren't exactly screaming with joy. Fortunately, for me, America's Math Teacher was not painful at all. LOL!

First of all this program is a web-based math curriculum with printable worksheets for $195/year. It covers Basic Math (grade 4) all the way to Algebra. It also meets NCTM (National Council of teachers of Mathematics) standards. The site is divided into:

Learning Center-video tutorials, printed exercises, quizzes and final exams.

Exercise Center-access and download printable exercises and review problems.

Evaluation Center-pre-tests and final exams (also available at the Learning Center)

Resource Center-information, glossaries and games. Our favorite is the speed drill-try to beat your time on whatever level of problems you're currently working.

Your child can initially watch the short video (lessons worked out on a white board), complete the written exercise,then check her answers in the solutions section. At the end of each section she will take a quiz. After each course there is a final exam.

What I like:

Unfortunately, we don't have the opportunity to study this way every day. When the weather is as beautiful as it has been lately we just can't resist but to move to our favorite place.

Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was a British educator who's teachings we closely follow. She believed that children should be outside at least 4-6 hours a day.

I've mentioned before that one of my goals is to learn to quilt. It's been a slow process for me. At times...very slow. I made this quilt top almost 7 years ago. Our pastor's wife taught a weekly class at our church. Because I had a very fussy infant at the time, I wasn't able to go to the last classes. This was where she showed everyone how to actually 'quilt'. So, I've kept this top tucked away for all these years.

While moving into our new home, I was able to organize all my sewing things. I have much more space and can actually see where everything is. Once again I came across that little log cabin quilt top. I decided that would be my next project. Only one problem-I still didn't know how to quilt it.

I spent tons of time online trying to just decide what pattern to quilt it with. After all the time I spent sewing the top, I surely didn't want to mess it up. Finally I settled on stippling. There's something about the look of stippling that I love, love, love! More experienced quilters will do this freehand, but I had to trace the pattern.

I'm absolutely thrilled with the finished product. It's not perfect by any means...but it's finished. If you like the fabric, it's from Moda. It's called Paris Flea Market by 3 Sisters. I can check the log cabin quilt off my to-do list. Now...what else do I have to finish?

Cake decorating

The girls and I have been doing lots of cooking lately. One of my goals this summer was to finally try all of those recipes I'd been saving. Another thing I've always been curious about is cake decorating. Fortunately for us, we have a dear friend who is an expert at decorating cakes. She came over for a visit one day and surprised us with tiny cakes of our own to decorate. She was so patient instructing us on all the different techniques. Cake Boss makes it look so easy but it's really not! LOL! This is definitely an art!

I don't see us going into the business anytime soon, but we certainly had an enjoyable day. Only one problem...after all that hard work none of us wanted to eat our cakes!

Even without looking at the calender I could tell it was September. The weather is so much nicer-at least in the early morning and late afternoon. The humidity has dropped (well at the moment it's still 90 %). There's a gently breeze blowing that just pulls you outdoors. Walking in the morning is so nice. Each evening I look forward to sitting on the back porch, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the peace around me.

Today, especially, I caught myself daydreaming of fall. Sweaters, soup in the crock pot and pumpkin pie. My favorite thing about fall is our annual trek north. I miss my Canadian friends so much.

Summer on the Gulf Coast can't be beat. I always look forward to it. Right now, fall is on my mind. It's nice to have something to look forward to.

I've always been the type that loved to read and write. In elementary school, I won a couple of different writing contests. In high school I was on the yearbook staff and always in advanced English. It was never work for me but pure enjoyment. When it comes to teaching the technical side of writing…I fail miserably! Therefore I literally jumped for joy when I found out we received a free trial of Vantage Learning's My Access! Home Edition. ( A big 'thank you' to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for allowing me to be a part of the review crew.)

What's included in the writing program? For $99.95 for up to 3 students or $129.95 for up to 6 students you receive:

As a parent I was able to set up student accounts for my girls-assigning individual projects for each. I could also schedule rewards and receive progress reports. Instruction is given in how to write narrative, persuasive and informative essays. The student's writings are assessed by their Focus, Content and Development, Organization, Language Use and Mechanics & Convention. They are then given a score on a scale of Below Proficient, Proficient and Advanced Proficient. There are also activities that the student can complete to help strengthen areas that need improvement.

The My Access! Home Editon website takes a bit of getting used to. With a little practice we were able to find our way around. Also, on their first assignments the girls were slightly confused with the grading and how to correct their mistakes. They quickly got the hang of it. One daughter loved that the website was so bright and fun; the other liked the idea of pretending she was an author and her work was being 'edited' before getting published. I liked knowing that my girls were finally getting a writing course that was concise, engaging and motivating but best of all that had non-subjective grading.

Russian Cooking Class

One of the things I love about traveling to different countries, besides meeting the people, is trying a variety of local foods. I love to eat! Recently Emma and I got to try some Russian food right here at home. Our friend who is from Belarus gave us a class in preparing what is one of her favorite foods.

Pelmeni is basically a dumpling that can be filled with several different foods. We put a mixture of ground beef and pork (with onions and seasoning) in ours. Here's the recipe for the dough:

Flour-700 g

Warm water-300g

butter-1 1/2 Tbsp

Combine ingredients and knead well until smooth. Roll out and cut circles (about 3inches in diameter). Place about a Tbsp of the raw meat mixture in the middle. Fold the dough over the meat and seal edges completely with fingers. To make it really pretty you can pinch the 2 ends together to make what I think looks like a tiny bonnet.

Place in boiling water that has been salted for about 8 minutes. Once the pelmeni is removed from the pot you can top with a generous amount of butter. :)

I was surprised at just how delicious this simple recipe is. Add a salad and you've got a very filling meal.

Grace is 12!

It seems like every time I turn around one of my girls is getting older. I miss them all being babies and toddlers but I'm really enjoying this season in our lives too. August is Grace's month. Our middle child who is quiet most of the time, very vocal at other times. :) She has the biggest most giving heart. Best of all she loves the Lord and daily seeks His wisdom. What a joy she is to me and the rest of the family. Happy birthday to my precious G-dog. Love you the world.

Travel Kits

Our family loves to travel. Sometimes though, the traveling part can get a little trying. Long car rides or sitting in an airport waiting on a flight that is several hours delayed can make even the most patient person a bit irritable.

Recently I was asked to review an e-book (from The Old Schoolhouse) entitled Travel Kits-A Simple Way to Bless Others by Donna Rees. Donna gives a variety of ways to entertain the whole family while traveling. Whether your kit is for a toddler or a teen, a grad or a grandparent, she not only gives you gift ideas but clever ways to package them. Who ever thought of using an ice chest or a hat to store gifts? It certainly does make the presentation more exciting. Don't think this has to be expensive. Some of her kits contain dollar store toys, lollipops and even library books that can be returned after the trip. Items can be wrapped in pretty paper or simply in yesterday's newspaper. There are 14 chapters filled with ideas for any age-from babies to elderly-plus a bonus section full of links, recipes and more. For $12.45, it's a great deal! I was so inspired after reading all the personal stories in Donna's book that I made my own box of blessings for my two girls going off to camp. I purchased $1.00 plastic storage boxes to hold a gift to open each day they're away. My girls were off to ballet camp for 2 weeks-dancing up to 5 hours a day. For their gifts I chose things like hair clips, a pretty water bottle, a mini first aid kit, Chap Stick and some little bags of candy. I also added stationary, cute little pens and a mini flashlight. I wrapped part of the gifts in some left over Valentine's paper; the others I wrapped in tissue paper. I used a favorite devotional to find Bible verses that I then printed out and tied on each gift with a ribbon. I included a Bible verse 'streamer' for them to decorate their dorm room with. In my case, I dated each gift. Certain items like the water bottle needed to be opened early on so they could use it at camp. Finally, I included a small card with a ballerina on the front and a personal message inside. My girls were thrilled and deeply touched to have a bit of home with them at camp.

God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9:7). With Donna's book it makes it easy to be a cheerful giver…and traveler. You can find her book and a variety of other materials for mom and child at The Old Schoolhouse.

Online School Solutions

One of the many things I love about homeschooling is that there are so many options out there. In my 8 years of teaching the girls, we've used everything from basic textbooks/workbooks, a classical approach with living books and this year we'll be changing to an all computer based curriculum. One avenue we personally haven't explored is online schooling. Recently I read about an option in our area- The Keystone School. I was really surprised at what I learned. They offer the typical subjects and electives that you would expect from any 'school'. In addition to that they have certified teachers available for support, along with a learning coach and guidance counselor. For those hs parents who work or are just super busy, this would take a real load off of them.
The part I liked the best were the extras. I know that some homeschoolers can feel really alone at times. Keystone has an online social hour for the students to 'hang out'. They also have discussion boards and a newsletter. For those who travel often, as we do, they have a cultural experiences seminar where you can share your travel experiences. All of these things are available for the middle school students. The high school students have these options along with being able to join the National Honor Society, write for the newspaper and participate in a virtual graduation.
The one and only downside I saw was that it could be a bit pricey for some families. Besides that it really seems like a wonderful way for middle and high school students to receive an education and socialize while still being able to keep a very flexible schedule.

Abaco

We went from fall in Argentina to summer in Abaco. What a change! My luggage was much lighter on this flight. LOL! This was a vacation to relax. We went boating, fishing and snorkeling; laid on the beach, had dinner with friends, had lunch with friends :). I so love to eat! LOL!
It was nice having friends from home with us and making new friends. Even Pablo was there from Argentina! I love the whole 'lodge' setting. Everyone sitting around a great big table eating together and getting to know each other. After dinner we'd all move outside to either sit by the fire or fish from the dock. It was a great vacation. I came home tan, relaxed and renewed. Oh...now I want to learn to fly fish too! Add it to my list. LOL!

Argentina

My first visit to Argentina a few weeks ago was a dream come true! Who wouldn't fall in love with this country and these sweet people? We spent time in Buenos Aires and also just outside of Cordoba. In BA we did lots of site seeing, shopping (got some cute boots and a jacket :) and ate at some really good restaurants (I so miss Ramone-one of our waiters).
Cordoba was a lot more laid back. We stayed in a gorgeous lodge, went horse back riding and explored the grounds around the lodge. Senor Chevez, a butler at the lodge, was so very kind and patient with us. He even helped us learn a bit of Spanish.
We also got to go out in the field where the guys were dove hunting to have lunch. I got a private shotgun shooting lesson from our friend Pablo. I actually hit the target-once! LOL! I plan on practicing a whole lot more.
My favorite part, as usual, was visiting with the people there and getting to know them. I really can't wait to go back (soon!).

It does my heart good to see my girls having fun together and loving each other. I realize they can't always get along so I cherish the moments like this one. Grace and Emma had a nice hot bubble bath. Then Grace massaged Emma's hands and feet and painted her nails. They also did oatmeal and honey facials (I'd recommend doing these before the bath. LOL) Later Grace gave Emma this little poem she had written:

When I'm feeling down
And there's no sunshine around,
Emma's my light and
She turns things back around.

Our Neighbors

Isn't it nice how God just sprinkles little blessing around to surprise you? When we bought our property, we did so because of how beautiful we thought it was-all the oak and dogwood trees along with the quiet little creek. It wasn't until the last couple of years that we met our neighbors. He happens to be someone I went to high school with. They haven't actually built down here yet but they've already moved their 'babies' over here. Yesterday they called to see if we wanted to come meet the newest additions-some chicks and baby goats.

They were just the sweetest things ever! We hated to put them down.
Not only do they have goats, but also Jenny the donkey, 2 cows and many chickens. It's so much fun to go visit all the animals and love on them. These 2 cow actually came over to our property and 'visited' one day too. LOL! The best part though is having Kim and Tommy as neighbors. They're so kind and giving-always ready to help. I love talking with the two of them and getting to know them better. I'm looking forward to them living down her permanently. Hopefully we'll be able to bless them like they've blessed us.

Well we've moved in-that was the easy part. Decorating is what has me stumped! The girls rooms are coming along. That is all except Grace's lamp shades. Just a little thing but boy does it bother me. LOL! We had ordered matching shades with the lamps but the company sent the wrong color. We've had so many problems with this certain company that I decided not to try reordering the right color shade. Instead I bought some plain white ones with the idea that I'd decorate them. 2 1/2 months later we still have plain white shades. Not that I didn't try. I glued ribbon horizontally around the top and bottom...didn't like it. Then I took another ribbon and glued it vertically...didn't like it. So, my last attempt was fabric. I thought I'd make a kind of skirt-elastic at the top and a bit flared at the bottom. Super easy, right? Not so much for me. :)
Funny thing is, I was talking with a group of moms just the other day. 2 of the moms never use patterns to sew or recipes to cook. The other mom and I admitted to having to have both. I'm for sure a pattern girl when it comes to sewing. If not a pattern I at least need a tutorial! Something! Don't just send me out on my own. Unfortunately that's what happened with these shades.
On the positive side-they're not plain white anymore. Grace said she "loves" them. She's the kind of girl who would never say anything different. As for me...I'm still not sure....

Taking Another Path

Those of you who know me personally, know I'm crazy about schedules for homeschooling. We have a weekly schedule that I print from Ambleside. I then make a daily schedule from this.
I save these each year as a part of our school records. Now, first of all, don't think we follow these to the letter. With our extra-curricular schedule sometimes there's no way to get it all done. I really just like knowing where we are and being able to see what's left to accomplish and the approximate amount of time it will take to get it done. This school year, with traveling, moving, etc we've gotten behind. We have a very heavy reading load anyway-to get behind is to fall into a deep hole! LOL! Lately we've been pushing to get caught up, slowly but surely.

In the midst of this we found out one of our daughters has a heart arrhythmia. Nothing life threatening or serious but something the docs say she won't outgrow. When this happened I was trying to explain to all the girls what was going on with Grace's heart. I realized that they don't know a whole lot about the heart or the circulatory system. That led me to one of our favorite places...the library. I came home with all of these:
We took one whole school day to read through all the books and discuss them. Then we watched a DVD on the circulatory system. Afterward I had the girls draw/trace the heart and label it.
Now we're in the process of working through a DVD on CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. This is all stuff that with me being a nurse, I'm crazy about. I think the girls might have enjoyed it too. I know for a fact that they learned a lot.

I'm glad now that I broke away from the trusty schedule for a day. Isn't that what homeschooling is all about-being flexible, following your interests and having the freedom to take another path? It works for us.

Do you have one of those mental lists of all the things you'd like to do/accomplish in your life? Mine is so long...and growing by the day. One of the things on my list is to learn to quilt. I've taken some classes but never really finished anything. My grandmother made quilts, my great aunts did; Mark's great grandmothers made quilts. We have several of theirs that I really cherish. Just think of the time and thought that went into each one. I think they're so special. I'm no where near ready to dive into making one like those ladies did. Baby steps here. What better way to start than with a baby doll quilt? I found this tutorial that Vanessa made. Talking about a super talented lady (and so sweet on top of it all!). She gives such easy, detailed instructions that even I could make it. Emma helped pick some of the fabrics since it's for her and her baby. She was in my sewing room quite often encouraging me with her words of praise. I'm so pleased with how this one turned out. It's not perfect...but it's a start.

FINALLY we've moved in!!!!! We've been in the house about a month. We've celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas in our new home. I've loved every minute of it! How blessed we feel to finally be here. No curtains, not all the furniture...but we're home. Here's a brief glimpse into our home.

Here's the kitchen on Christmas morning. I love having our extended family with us. Very comfortable. I love my kitchen!Mary's room-all Hollywood glam. Perfect for her. The opposite wall has a pic of Audrey Hepburn. Even I like her room!
Here's Grace's room. She's always loved brown and pink. It's perfect for her. I love the polka dots!Last but not least is Emma. Her bed is not complete, but we're patiently waiting. It's the perfect color of pink for a princess!

Here's my little yellow sewing room. I have this vision of it looking like a bedroom in

Granny's house. I love the iron bed and the old armoire that was my grandfather's. I'd love to make a quilt to put on the bed. Hanging on the armoire is a christening gown that I made for Emma. This room makes me feel happy!

The living room on Christmas morning!

One of my favorite things is the view out the windows. I love living in the deep south. Just look at the moss dripping from that old oak tree. That happens to be Aubbie our little orange cat climbing in the tree. Just beyond this is the creek.
Hopefully soon we'll have the house a little more decorated and pulled together. Maybe I'll post more pictures then. I have to say, I'm just happy to be here. We've waited so long and God has chosen to bless us beyond our wildest dreams. I'm so very content.

A quiet afternoon

The last couple of weeks Emma and I have been able to meet some friends at the library while we wait on our big girls to dance. This is such a sweet time for us for many reasons. Emma enjoys her little friend while I chat with her mom. I also feel it's a very cherished second chance that God has given me with my friend. Cherish I do every moment I have with her. I wish there were many more (I don't think she's quite up to that yet! LOL). Today, though, our friends didn't make it. It was very, very quiet at the library because all the computers were down. What a perfect opportunity for me and Emma. She did puzzles and built with blocks and we read tons of books (or so it seemed). Two of which Emma picked out all by herself that were so very good I thought I needed to pass them along.

Here was the first book: Degas and the little dancer by Laurence Anholt. Part of our homeschool curriculum includes studying famous artists. What family of ballerinas would not look at Degas? This book was really sweet and gave a kind of personal glimpse of Degas. In the back was a brief history of Degas-perfect for a 6 year old.Who wouldn't want to read about mice living in a tree?? This was so cute! The mice have a special 'festival' to celebrate winter. In the process, two mice children discover some secret rooms beyond the attic. The Secret Staircase by Jill Barklem is just precious!

I do hope our friends show up next time we visit the library but just in case they don't we can can always make new friends in all the unread books!

New stuff...kind of! LOL!

Why does it always seem that I'm trying to catch up? I like to think that it means my life is full. Full of love, family, friends and so many blessings! Never a dull moment here. So...now I try to catch up. Sweet April wanted pictures from Canada. Maybe I can post these without crying. Those friends there are so precious to me. Wish I could see them more than just once a year.

I love these old grain elevators! What is it about them that draws me to them? Honestly, I want to print black and whites of these and hang them in our house. They are just lovely to me.

Farming is such a big part of the area we visit in Canada. It seems everyone is connected to it in someway. Usually by the time we arrive in the fall all the crops have been harvested. This year was a bit different. Farmers were still staying up all night trying to harvest their crops. It seems that this summer had been very wet and cold. We were fortunate enough to get to ride in the combine with our buddy Firmin. I realize that doing this day in and day out must get old, but for us it was so much FUN!!

He and Sharon are so dear to us. I wish we had many more hours to spend with the two of them.

Besides farming we did lots of visiting, tons of eating and even a little pumpkin carving at Auntie Cheryl's house. I never imagined I'd have so much fun.My favorite thing to do in Manitoba is visit Mrs. Phyllis. She's Cheryl's neighbor and she's just adorable. This lady should have been born in the south. Talk about southern hospitality...she's got it down to a perfection! Over the years, as we've sat at her kitchen table, we've had many cups of hot tea, perogies, homemade cakes and lots of homemade cookies. Oh! and I can't possibly forget the homemade sauerkraut! Talk about delicious! I love, love to visit with her and learn about her life. What a precious lady she is.Now everyone knows the real reason we get to go to Canada, right? It's to hunt, of course! Never will you see so many geese and ducks. Our dogs (and my husband) are in heaven!
I can't imagine anyone visiting here and not falling in love...with the prairie and with the people.Heaven just has to be a little bit like Shoal Lake.
